The Monthly Progress Note by Adele Frost, M.Ed., The AFISA Elements Newsletter - March 2025

Hello there, AFISA Elementors!
March is Emotional Month
The month of March is a time when we reflect on our emotional reactions to everything. Personally, I take pause on what I'm feeling, what I'm thinking, the choices that I'm making and how I'm reacting to the world around me. Gotta be honest... it's not always pretty. Emotional Intelligence is a life-long learning process. Why? Because life events aren't always the same. New situations pop up and we not really sure on how to react to them. Things are always shaking up our short comfortable stages in life. It's also because we need to train our brains on how to respond to things.
Unconsciously, our body registers information on a survival level, well before you organize and rationalize information from the intellectual level. Ever hear of the word wisdom? Wisdom comes from the ability to process information from both the nervous system and your brain BEFORE responding to stimuli. Wisdom is taking pause before reacting. This is emotional intelligence - that inbetween what you are thinking and feeling before reacting. Let me rephrase that:
feeling + thinking then choice = behavior or response.
The most intelligent skill you can learn is emotional intelligence - that "choice" before you react. You have choices in how you react to your environment around you. Yes, yes you do.
When you are in Life Coaching Sessions with me, we discuss emotional intelligence often. Why? Because the two frameworks that Daniel Goleman describes in his book Working with Emotional Intelligence greatly impact our relationships, our jobs, our money; basically, our lives. Those two frameworks are Personal Competence and Social Competence, two keys elements in my AFISA Elements Programming.
Daniel Goleman lists Personal Competence as Self-Awareness, Self-Regulation and Motivation. Social Competence is Empathy and Social Skills.
When you look further into Personal Competence, it includes your emotional awareness, accurate self-assesment, self-confidence, self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, innovation, achievement drive, committment initiative and optimism.
Daniel lists Social Competence as understanding others, developing others, service orientation, leveraging diversity, political awareness, influence, communication, conflict management, leadership, change catalyst, building bonds, collaboration and cooperation and finally team capabilities.
Phew! I know. It's alot! How are you rating your skills and abilities in these areas of emotional intelligence? See how it's a life-long journey?
Top 10 things I do in Emotional Month:
1. I have Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman readily available to use as a reference guide, marked at page 26 in the hard cover book. This book guides my behavior as I strive to obtain my own emotional intelligence goals. Most of you know this as I speak to it in my Saturday and Sunday Weekly Scheduling for Success Workshops.
2. Every week I remind myself of my goal to Pause, breathe, Pause, Process information/Listen, then Proceed Positively. This daily reminder on my weekly calendar has served me for years with my relationships and at work.
3. I review the Emotional Spiral graphic of Ascending and Descending Emotions. By doing this, I can name my emotions for clearly. It's actually in my Lifebook, my personal development plan, as a reference that I look at when I need to, not just during Emotional Month. Here's the exact picture from Pinterest of the Emotional Spiral in my Lifebook.

4. I review the ways I can respond to my moods. I captured a reel yesterday of a few ways to deal with my emotional states. Here's a picture with the resource.

5. I review my bad days in my daily planner, noting antecedents to "losing it" emotionally then try to address, avoid or eliminate those antecedents. For me, when I'm getting sick, actually sick, healing from a procedure or hungry, I tend to become emotional. When I go to the doctor and receive news on my bloodwork that markers are out of range, a new diagnosis or yet another procedure, I'm emotional. When I'm tired, I become emotional. Knowing these antecedents helps me to adjust my work schedule to relax, take care of my own needs, and reset my emotions before going back to work or interacting with family and friends.
6. I send compassion to others who are emotional, especially when in pain. If there's one thing that I have learned through my own journey with pain is compassion for others in pain. As i meditate in the morning, I send compassion to everyone in pain on this Earth. I send my positive energy to YOU!
7. I use my AFISA Elements Personal Health Plan to address my emotions and your emotions. I created a program and personal health plan tool to address my past emotional states, finding happiness again using my PHP method. In my program and with this tool, I show you how to use it for better mental health and emotional intelligence. There's the link to that virtual program. https://adelefrost.mykajabi.com/offers/if7t95ma/checkout
8. I focus on what makes me happy and I let go of what I cannot control. This sounds alot easier than it is. I'll leave a book reference for you at the bottom of this read that touches on this topic. (hint: the lady with the glasses)
9. I create my beau-tea-ful environment. As you know I also own PaperFascinator.com, a paper party product company, specializing in tea parties. This is my happy place. I create my happy place. I take daily action to create my happy space. I love digital design and the creation of paper products. It's one way I spread joy to others as they plan their milestone events with their loved ones and they create their own beau-tea-ful tea parties. I'm happy in this place and my customers are happy. Good stuff!
10. Spread the LOVE! Give. By giving, you may not always receive but I can assure an elevated chemical response of endorphins when you make someone smile! Performing acts of kindness or speaking to others in the 5 love languages brings me joy. It raises my emotional well-being. It's the way I spread love in this world. Thus your gift of this newsletter from me to YOU! This makes me happy to give ideas to you! How are you going to give today?

RESOURCES
Gabby Bernstein's App: I usually sign up for Gabby's Manifesting Challenge to kick start my mindset for the New Year. She really touches upon the emotional intelligence aspects of goal setting and getting yourself into a positive mindset. This challenge is over but get on her email list for upcoming challenges and to check out her meditations. They are great emotional boosters to turn your frown upside down. She's a great life coach to boost your spirits! https://gabbybernstein.com
TEDX: While researching for my book, David Kessler kept coming across my desk. He's most famous for topics of death and dying but don't dismiss his impact on loss - loss of jobs, divorce, friendships/relationships. His TEDX is a wealth of knowledge for folks going through emotional roller coasters, specifically how to find meaning after loss. https://www.ted.com/talks/david_kessler_how_to_find_meaning_after_loss
Book: Mel Robbins, "the lady with the glasses," is another mentor of mine. Her most recent book Let Them addresses the way we feel, think, and behave with our loved ones, aquaintances, coworkers and strangers. Her casual style of conversation in the audible book (of which I highly recommend to hear her vocal fluctuations and sassy satire) helps a person to understand human behavior and finding our wisdom, our emotional intelligence. https://www.melrobbins.com/books
