The Monthly Progress Note by Adele Frost, M.Ed., The AFISA Elements Newsletter - April 2025

(fun with Picsi.Ai in Character Month)
Hello there, AFISA Elementors!
April is Character Month
The month of April is a time to reflect on your character. What does that mean? Usually the word character is associated with moral and ethical qualities but it's much more than that. It involves a person's beliefs, principles and standards that influence their choices and behavior.
Don't confuse character with your personality. When I said character "influences" behavior, our past beliefs, principles and standards can influence our daily choices and temperaments throughout the day. The combination of our temperament and daily behaviors become the very habits, routines and systems in a person's life which friends and family commonly generalize to be a person's personality.
When we are trying to change behavior, start with character = your beliefs, principles and standards. Tweaks in how you think, perceive things and proceed in decision-making with ultimate action can create great changes in your temperament and behavior. Making proactive and positive changes in your temperament (how you immediately react and how you continue to act) can play a huge part in how others perceive you. It can also impact the opportunities that cross your path. When you behave proactively and positively in various situations, through self-reflection, self-regulation and training, the opportunities that present themselves become extraordinary! The possibilities become options that you've never considered before! Folks around you will say "Something is different about you. Keep doing what you're doing!"
Top 10 things I do in Character Month:
1. I review my Identity Card. I developed a game called the Identity Card Game which is the first step in my AFISA Elements Life Coaching Program. The Identity Game provides a great background of your thoughts, beliefs, principles and standards. It's a game that takes into account 12 categories of your life and inevitably becomes the cornerstone of developing your goals toward your dream life - your Life Vision. If you want to develop your own Identity Card, check out AdeleFrost.com and take the Identity Card Game course. The inexpensive cost of the program is less than dinner and it can completely transform your life!
2. I take out my Benjamin Franklin's List of 13 Virtues. I got this list from CORE IQ.com and have kept it for years. I use this guide and my Identity card for conscious and intentional decision-making.
3. I review my Lifebook for clarity in where I'm going - towards my best self. I took an awesome personal development program by Jon and Missy Butcher now on the MindValley platform. This program is one of the best personal development programs on Earth and a must-take if you are serious about transforming your life. Hereās an affiliate link to check it out: https://join.mindvalley.com/r/jHn6Y7zMdgSi
4. I post words of inspiration and quotes all around me. I do this to rewrite negative beliefs, consider best practice principles and standards that work for me, not to please other people. I will admit that I've inherited some outdated, non-sensical beliefs and standards. I've worked hard over the course of the last few years to break down these unhelpful thoughts and perspectives.
5. I spring clean my homeā what does not serve me, I throw out. No judgement here because I have a lot of āstuffā in my home. As a crafter, I continually declutter, reorganize, clutter up again then need to start the process over. Each time I clean though, I gain a better understanding of what is necessary. I want to be organized, productive and prosperous so I spring clean!
6. I practice silence. As I age, I enjoy silence. I turn off the radio, the pod casts, the tv and move about my day in silence. Now I know with young families, this may be challenging. Within the busy days and nights, usually there is a five minute window of peace and quiet. I do relish in even a short tea time in silence.
7. I make BOLD moves. From my meditation time, the silence and the personal development programs Iāve taken, one thing I know is that I am worthy of more. In the last three months, Iāve made some bold moves that literally paid off. Now Iām not quitting my day job but I can see potential in my two businesses. Itās there. Now, itās time to step up and out of those limiting beliefs into my full potential!
8. I am conscious of the way I communicate and my mannerisms. This month my plan is to be aware of the words I am communicating to myself and others. I want to be conscious of how I speak with my tone, dialect and manner. I will be mindful of my bodily movements and mannerisms when I interact with others. Why? Because I want to portray character traits that allow my character and personality to shine! I want to move toward a better me, for myself and to serve others in my two businesses - Life Coaching and The Paper Fascinator, a party decoration business. Check out https://www.blog.reedsy.com for the Ultimate List of 150 Character Mannerisms. Yikers⦠I do a lot of them! Developing a Character Profile is another level from my game, the Identity Game. This is an interesting read and activity if you dare!
9. I research blogs on character and personality, basically gaining insight about myself and about others body language and mannerisms. If you have time, check out the blog on https://www.servicescape.com about 165 Mannerisms that will bring your Character to Life. Now this is a blog on writing about characters in a book but I provide the source here for other reasons. When you are reading a book, the use of the authorās words paint the picture of the story through the characters. If you took perspective of YOUR story, what are you portraying? Do you like your character? For a list of these mannerisms, check out the blog. Itās sure to open your eyes about the true you. Itāll also provide perspective on how you are perceiving others.
10. I appreciate all characters. As I gain information and perspective about all walks of life, I appreciate the different characters that cross my path. I am more open-minded, less reactive, less judgmental, more interested and compassionate of others. Everyone has their own story, their character. I have learned to observe more and respect the characters in my life. I believe people come into my life for a reason. I seek to understand and appreciate those lessons.
CHALLENGE
In your next conversation, observe your thoughts, beliefs, values, principles and standards.
Now observe how you interpret what the person and saying and how you reaction to the topic.
Is this the character you want to portray in your story? How can you change your thoughts, your beliefs, values, principles or standards this month to guide you toward your better self?

RESOURCES
CharacterHub.com I love this website! There are soooo many exercises for you to do this month! These prompts are not just for writers! These prompts are perfect for the deeper dive into personal development. Check out this websute to find a few prompts for reflection in the month of April.
YouTube: Check out the video that analyzes Matthew McConaughey's character traits on @CharismaonCommand. Listen how to carry yourself in a room, form a hook in a story, how to act out your character across your journey, how to your hands while story-telling and telling your story in the present tense. Personally, I have not taken the Charisma Course but I could see the advantage of taking the course to increase my on-stage communication skills.
Book: The Power of One More: The Ultimate Guide to Happiness and Success by Ed Mylett is the audible book I've chosen for April. I've been listening to Ed on the GrowthDay App going on two years now. This book has been on my list now for 12 months. Ed is a dynamic speaker, a great story-teller, with a presence in character that grabs your attention. He inspires you with his life lessons, sharing in your wins and failures, your hopes and dreams, your pain and your strife. He's a true mentor of mine. It's time to give his book a listen as I build strength in my own character to level up towards my own Life Vision!
IN CONCLUSION
If you're reading this last section, you're committed to self-improvement, making it way of life. Self awareness and conscious decision-making lead to making better decisions. Good decision making is admirable. Admirable people are good mentors with idealic character traits. Are you going to take the challenge this month of becoming a better you? Reach out to me for more discovery! [email protected]

Adele Frost, M.Ed.
