The Monthly Progress Note - August 2025

Hello there, AFISA Elementors!
August is Social Month
By now, the hot summer heat waves have slowed our weekends to lazy days full of opportunities to spend outdoors to soak up the sun or indoors to cool off in the air conditioning. Why don't we take some time to socialize during this month to reconnect with friends and family members? There are many fairs and festivals taking place. The beaches are full of life and activity. Remember... Fall and Winter are around the corner! We need to take advantage of the warm weather days to venture out, see new things, eat new foods, and try something new! It's the perfect time to take a loved one along as a side-kick on your adventure!
Introverted? Not really into those "social scenes?" Have you though about meeting new people in a smaller local group? Have you thought about joining a membership online?
Statistically, people who interact with others - strangers, friends or family, have a tendency of living longer. For longevity purposes, get out there into the community - online or in-person! Carpe Diem and have fun!
10 THINGS TO DO IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST ā SOCIAL MONTH
1. Reach out to a friend and go out to dinner. Face-to-face, in-person visits are second to none when it comes to socializing. How many times have you seen an old friend and just picked up where you left off? Even if the timeframe is only 2 hours, you can reconnect with friends very quickly and revive a long-lost friendship. Who in your friend circle is a person you've been meaning to connect with?
2. Create a Group Text with a bunch of friends or follow up with a message to your current group. I love sending out a quick hello to my kids' sport groups to say hello and catch up briefly with fellow moms. Now that my children are long out of high school and now college, our groups don't go out as often. Sending a group text message can revive relationships, potentially create a social event and support others in things we were not aware of. Even a GIF or emoji can make a person's day so spread some cheer!
3. Start a conversation with a stranger. My third child is starting college in the fall. (2 down, one to go.) You'd think during my third college orientation program, that I'd have the systems down pat...not so much. Navigating student life and academics is different at every college and different with every child. As my son separated from me during Orientation to take the "Student Track," I attended the "Parent Track." Sitting for hours over two days was challenging in the 90-100 degree weather. Making small talk with fellow parents not only passed the time but developed new friendships. I took advantage of meeting people from New England, swapped contact information and followed up with texts to support our kids and ourselves during the college move and student events. By starting a conversation with a stranger, I was able to feel a part of the group, make a acquantaince/a friend and feel supported emotionally throughout the process.
4. Call people by their name, especially at my local grocery store. You would be surprised how employees at stores will take care of you if call them by their name and say hello. Remembering a name becomes a personal interaction in conversations. The employee will remember me and care about my shopping experience. In turn, I get the perspective of what is going on with them as a person if they choose to engage in a conversation. Recognizing what people do for a living to make the world go around is awe-inspiring. I'm full of gratitude when I realize the length that folks will go in their field to make shoppers happy. Expanding my consciousness in my surroundings and seeing how many people it takes to support me and my family is incredible. Start calling the grocers by name, give them a smile and a hello!
5. Joining a Group. August gets me thinking about the new school year. Even though I graduated from my Master's Degree 30+ years ago, I'm a perpetual student. I'm curious and always looking for something new to learn. It's a great way to meet new people for a short period of time. I can also choose to continue the relationship after the class ends...or not. Taking a class is a great way to meet new people.
6. Vacation with Family. When is the last time you took a vacation? When is the last time you took a vacation with family? I love the benefit of staying with family when I can, at least for a day or two, to catch up on life's events and support my loved ones. I am selective with whom I go on vacation with and tend to organize group time and time alone during vacations. It sets the tone for activities, meal times, preferences, and needs. There's nothing wrong with splitting up during the highlight of the day and getting together later for a short period of time or meals thereafter. Preparation is key as well as patience. What family member could you engage in a day-cation with? Who could you go out on a vacation with?
7. Sharing your abundance with others. Having a garden over flowing with vegetables that will never make it into the freezer is a great way to socialize with others - by gifting! Share your abundance! Cleaning the basement and looking to get rid of stuff? Ask a friend or family member if they want the item before you bring it to Goodwill or throw it into the trash. This is a great way to share your abundance and briefly catch up with folks during the summer.
8. Going out with co-workers. Happy Hours at the local restaurant with a deck outdoors, attending conferences, or sight-seeing at a local event can bridge a work relationship and spark inspiration in the work environment. There are professional advantages to going out with co-workers so why not consider organizing a timeframe to brain-storm, de-escalate or work together in a different capacity other than the office.
9. Create and FaceBook Community! If you're having a hard time finding your people, create a FaceBook group on-line. By setting up your own page or a group, you can list your interests and put it out there for others to find you! Post interesting topics for others to comment on for interaction within the group. Ensure you monitor the page and interact with others. Watch your tribe grow over time!
10. Be the Role Model, lead and watch others migrate to you. If you are called to lead others, DO IT! Now is the time to fulfill your purpose during your time here on Earth. You are meant for this.
